62nd Battalion
104th Engineers
Mission Statement
Captain's Message

Gentlemen, I am a company
commander that will be
transforming my company from
C/62 to the 104th EN CO..... With
that being said, I am looking at
dedicating our conference  room
to a past 104th Veteran who
earned a MoH or Silver Star.
If you have any suggestions,
then please forward them to me.
A citation for their actions
would be of help too;
however, I can probably
acquire those if they aren't
already on hand. Thanks
for your help.

Captain ADRIAN.P.VASQUEZ
Specialist Michael Tellez from the 104th
Engineer Company, 62nd Engineer
Battalion, was recently selected as the
Engineer Regimental Van Autreve Award
recipient 2009 for his outstanding
contributions and service to Army
engineers and the United States Army.

Each year, the Engineer Regimental Van
Autreve Award, named in honor of former
Sergeant Major of the Army Leon Van
Autreve, is presented to Soldiers who
display honorable attributes. Only the
finest engineer Soldiers are selected as
recipients of this award. The Soldiers will
carry the distinction and recognition of
being the Engineer branch’s best Soldier
throughout their careers.

Tellez was selected as the honoree based
on leadership recommendations for his
outstanding performance as a Soldier and
his mastery of skills as a carpentry/masonry
specialist.

“Spc. Tellez is a remarkable Soldier who
has been able to capture the lessons
taught by his leaders and put them into
practice,” Capt. Adrian P. Vasquez,
commander for 104th Eng. Co., said.

The Van Autreve Award is one of five
engineer awards presented annually.

Distinguishing selection areas include
physical fitness, marksmanship,
educational growth, morale and welfare
activities and a host of other discerning
areas that are looked at in the overall
selection process.

“Spc. Tellez is a fine young warrior and
epitomizes the future of our Corps of
Engineers” Lt. Col. Corey M. Spencer,
commander of the 62nd Eng. Bn., said.

During his deployment to Afghanistan in
2008, Tellez was a member of 2nd Platoon
at Vehicle Patrol Base Wanat. His unit’s
mission was to build the perimeter and
guard towers for the VPB. The platoon
found itself in the middle of an intense
four-hour fight, in which Tellez was
wounded but still managed to perform first
aid on fellow Soldiers. Because of his
heroic actions during the Battle of Wanat,
Tellez was awarded the Bronze Star Medal
with “V” Device for valor and the Purple
Heart.

Lt. Gen. Robert L. Van Antwerp Jr., Chief of
Engineers and commanding general of the
Corps of Engineers and Brig. Gen. Bryan
Watson, commandant of the Engineer
Regiment, presented the Van Autreve
Award to Tellez at the Annual Engineer
Conference at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.,
April 21.

“Receiving the Van Autreve Award is a
huge honor, and the ceremony and ball
were amazing,” Tellez said.
