| I joined the 104th in late summer 1970 while they were in Bien Hoa. We mostly were hauling gravel and blacktop up Highway 1. We later moved south to Can Tho where we supported road-building projects there and I believe Soc Trang. I do remember the place was crawling with rats and there was an RVN base right across the rice patty. I mostly hung around with Jim Geisler and Charlie Stone. I later run into Charlie at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., but haven't seen or talked to Jim since I left Vietnam. If memory serves me, Jim was running the little club we set up in Can Tho. That's when the Illinois flag got signed by all the guys from the state. One of my favorite pictures was taken in the club. I was sitting on a stool with a cigarette in one hand and a drink in the other. Today, I neither drink nor smoke. Funny how time changes your outlook on life. My son and daughter-in-law live in the Fort Worth (Texas) area and my daughter, son-in-law and two precious granddaughters live here in Quincy (Illinois). |
