Almost 40 years ago Certainly a lot has happened to all of us since we left the special unit we called home, the 104th Engineer Co DT. It was my first assignment as a new "butter bar", and a chance to find out if I could hack it. I could and I did as did everyone else under the guidance of "Pappy" and the other senior NCOs. I'm sorry that I didn't keep a copy of a morning report so that I could have a reference for names. The mind dims after so much time and many of the names are lost not only to memory but also to the nick names that we called each other. I'm sure our paths crossed if we were there around the same time but forgive me if I cannot honestly say I remember you specifically. The other PL with me was Lt "flash" Gordon. Certain events stick out in my memory, a resupply trip to Duc Wa in the Plain of Reeds, Running asphalt from Cu Chi to Tay Ninh, blown bridges, mined roads and of course the ever present rain, oppressive heat, or the searing sun. Spent seven months and then was reassigned to Nui Ba Den to make asphalt until my DROS. Ed Hanke |
